Elden Joseph Scothern returned to his Heavenly Father on February 11, 2023 free from any mental or physical limitations. He has graduated with honors!
Elden was born on July 17, 1929 just before midnight in Elwood, Utah. However, his birthday was celebrated on the 18th for much of his life until his birth certificate was looked at more closely.
He attended the American Fork Training School from the time he turned 5 until he turned 18. He then worked at Big J Mills in Brigham City until he retired at age 62.
He spent much of his time off from working at the Mill helping in his Mothers garden and yard and was held to a very high standard and kept everything beautiful. When the yard work was done he would spend time with nephews cat-fishing on the Bear river and local ponds, enjoying a root beer float and watching Wheel of Fortune or Little House On The Prairie. He loved to bowl and was on many league teams in Brigham City over the years.
Elden would walk miles and miles two times a week collecting aluminum cans from the side of the road that he would take to the recycling center for "pocket money". Later in life when the walks were for leisure and exercise he began a journal of the number of blocks that he had walked that day and would add it up, keeping track of a grand total. As the number grew he started asking anyone and I do mean anyone "how many blocks do you think I've walked"? He would always grin when a guess was made then proudly announce the real number. As he aged and was no longer able to take walks the question became "How old do you think I am"? Anyone who knows Elden has been asked one of these questions.
Elden loved children and always had a special child or family that would sit with him at church. He delighted in telling about these friends. He would treasure cards and notes from these families and children and carry them for years, showing them to all of his visitors.
He is preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Ruby Scothern, Wendell (Lori) Scothern, Arleta (Richard) Neilson, Clinton (Iona) Scothern, Duane (Dalene) Scothern, Doyle (AdaLynn) Scothern, Ferris Scothern, Nona Lewis.
He is survived by one brother, Lloyd (Gwen) Scothern of Grantsville, UT. and many nephews, nieces, great nephews and nieces and great great nephews and nieces.
