Elwin Rich Merritt, our loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, was called home from this earthly life on November 30, 2023 at the age of 88.
Elwin was born in Afton, Wyoming on September 29, 1935. He was the third son of Ray Marcellis and Ethel Charolate Rich Merritt.
He was reared and educated in Afton and graduated from Star Valley High School in 1953. Elwin attended Ricks College and received an Associate Degree in Agronomy. He also received an Associate Degree from Weber State College in 1971 in Electronics.
Elwin served in the East Central States Mission from 1955-1957.
He married his sweetheart, Amee Elaine Heater in the Idaho Falls Temple on July 23, 1959.
Elwin joined the Army National Guard in December of 1957, he was called to active duty during the Berlin Crisis in 1961, coming home in August of 1962.
He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served in many capacities including Young Men's President, Elders Quorum President, High Priest Group Leader, and counselor in Bishopric. Elwin and Elaine served a mission in Columbus, Georgia, served in the Bishop's Storehouse in Brigham City, served in the Provo Mission on the church farm in Elberta. They were ordinance workers in the Ogden Temple from 2006 to 2010.
Elwin enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, woodworking, reading and being with family and friends.
Surviving are his 5 children: Charles (Audree) Merritt; Becky (Cal) Robinson; Kim (Sharon) Merritt; Amee Merritt; Daniel (Shelley) Merritt; daughter-in-law, Kathy (Glen) Nickerson; 19 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; two brothers and one sister, Max Merritt, Blaine Merritt, and Gwenna Rae Merritt.
He was preceded by his parents, his wife, Elaine Merritt, one son, Lynn Merritt, two brothers, D'Orr Merritt and LaMont Merritt.
Funeral services will be held at Brigham City West Stake Center, 895 N. 625 W., on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at 11:30 am. A viewing will be held prior to the funeral at the Brigham City West Stake Center from 9:00-11:00 am.
Interment will be in the Brigham City Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans of Box Elder County.
