Isabelle Cora Hyland, affectionately known as Izzy, Belle, and Nana, was a vibrant and generous soul who left an unforgettable mark on the hearts of those who knew her. She unexpectedly, yet peacefully, passed away on Mother's Day, May 14, 2023, surrounded by her family.
Born on May 22, 1944, in Santa Clara, California, Isabelle was the second child of six in her family. She spent her early years in the Santa Clara/San Jose area before eventually making her home in Perry, Utah. Throughout her life, Isabelle's dedication to her family, her passion for helping others, and her love for life shone like a beacon, guiding and inspiring those around her.
Isabelle married the love of her life, Bruce Hyland, on June 25, 1977, and together they built a beautiful family. Isabelle's love for her family, friends, and pets was boundless, and she took great joy in spoiling her grandchildren and nurturing all those in her care.
Isabelle graduated from Weber State University’s nursing program in 1985 and began her career as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at Brigham City Hospital where she was awarded Nurse of the Year on several occasions. She also worked as an EMT, an emergency room nurse, and a nurse at several medical clinics, but her favorite nursing role was with the newborn babies. Her servant's heart also led her to serve as the Director of the Pregnancy Care Center in Box Elder County. Many women she helped there consider her a dear friend to this day. Her tireless volunteer work with multiple food banks — in Box Elder County and Orangevale, California — exemplified her compassionate spirit and commitment to making a difference in her community.
Isabelle was an active member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Brigham City. She had a strong faith and loved the Lord, which was displayed daily in her desire to serve others.
In her retirement years, Isabelle's zest for life continued to flourish. She was an avid fan of crossword puzzles, enjoyed trying her hand at painting, loved shopping, and treasured time spent with her family. Her love for cooking, traveling, going for motorcycle rides, attending concerts, mani-pedis, old movies, and anything to do with dragonflies showcased her diverse interests and her ability to embrace life's simple pleasures.
Isabelle is survived by her spouse, Bruce Hyland; daughters, Yvonne McGaha (Kevin) and Victoria McFarland; and sons Zachary Bonham and Matthew Hyland (Ashley). She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren: Matthew, Erica (Cory), Ian, Derek, Shayna, Zane, Zoe and Taylor; her great-grandchildren, Joshua and Julia; her twin brothers, George and Gilbert Castro, and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents Gabriel and Mary Castro, her two sisters, Anita & Rosalie, and one brother, Gabriel.
Our family would like to give our sincere thanks to the U of U medical staff for their many efforts at making our mother comfortable and for their kindness to our family. We would also like to thank all of the family and friends who have offered to help in any way, including "Auntie Belle's" niece, Lela, who spent so much time with her.
Please join Isabelle's family in celebrating her extraordinary life on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at Gillies Funeral Chapel, located at 634 East 200 South, Brigham City, Utah, 84302. Greeting with the family will begin at 1:00 pm, followed by a memorial service at 1:30 pm.
