Mrs. Laurie Jean Simpson, age 62, crossed through the veil of life on January 17, 2023, at Providence Hospital in the company of her husband of 40 years. There will be a viewing at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 25, 2023, at the Klatt Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located at 11701 Puma Street in Anchorage with funeral services following immediately after at 2:00 P.M. She will be buried on February 4, 2023, in Brigham City, Utah at 1:00 p.m.
Laurie came to Alaska in 1979 to spend a few weeks visiting her sister. A few weeks turned into a few years and just as she was considering moving back to her home in Utah, she met the man who would become her husband while working for National Bank of Alaska in Soldotna. A few months later they were married and started an almost 40-year adventure. During this time, they lived in Fairbanks, Valdez, Juneau, Soldotna again and finally Anchorage.
She held jobs in the various communities she lived in, but her favorite and most cherished job was being a mother to her four children, Keain, Cason, Richard, and Erin.
She was a proud member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving various positions, mostly as a Primary or Sunday School teacher. Though she enjoyed baking birthday and other specialty event cakes and wedding cakes (winning awards for them), her favorite activity was spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Life was always an adventure when you spent a day with Laurie. She had a fascination for every little thing that piqued her interest. Her natural curiosity and an eye for the unusual was something that we all loved about her. She excelled at multiple craft activities and her most favorite were the ones she did with her children and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, Gerald Rothwell Willbur, and mother, Sharon Joy Rude.
She is survived by her husband William J. Simpson, daughter Keain R. Dillon (Victor), son Cason J. (Courtney), son Richard J. and daughter, Erin R, grandchildren Blain, Blake, Zoey, Kyran, Archor, Skarlit, James, Elliana, and Olivia, brother Kevin R. Willbur (Vynette), sister Cheryl R. Combs (Michael), sister Julie L. Sealy (Curtis) and brother Eric R. Willbur (Emmy) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Donations may be made in Laurie's name to the American Cancer Society.
