Laurn Weldon Wilhelm passed away peacefully the morning of Sunday, July 9, 2023, surrounded by his wife and children in Ogden, Utah. Laurn was born February 17, 1944 in Logan, Utah to Edmund and Lucille Wilhelm. Growing up on a farm in North Logan, Laurn learned the value of hard work. From his childhood, he developed a can-do attitude that would lead to his being a great contributor in a world needing helping hands. He learned of sorrow early in life as his brother Dennis passed away when Laurn was 7 years old and his father passed away when Laurn was 9 years old. Among the many examples of his dedicated service, he served two missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Germany Berlin Mission, as a young man and then following retirement with his wife. He valued education, receiving a bachelor’s degree in speech education with a minor in German and a master’s degree in instructional media and library science from Utah State University. In 1970, he received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Army National Guard two days before he married his sweetheart, Eloise Dunn in the Logan, Utah Temple. They will always be grateful to Laurn’s sister Carol (who was a good friend of Eloise) for introducing them. In their many happy, and at times challenging, years together they lived in various places, principally for nearly four decades in Laramie, Wyoming and finally in Pleasant View, Utah.
Laurn’s life was focused on serving his family and in the Church and communities where he lived. If there was a sidewalk to be shoveled, a widow in need, a family to be moved, or a baby to be rocked to sleep, Laurn was always there to see it done. He enjoyed reading, repairing and improving his and others’ homes, gardening, and playing games, watching movies and dancing with Eloise. He could fix or build anything, notably the home where they raised their children. He worked for many years at the University of Wyoming in the Learning Resource Center and worked hard at several side jobs to support his family. His children will be forever grateful for his example of hard work, sacrifice, and service. Some of their fondest memories include going to the mountains to collect firewood for the cold Laramie winters and the nail-biting ride back down the mountains with the old wood-laden truck and trailer.
Laurn was preceded in death by his parents Edmund Louis Wilhelm and Lucille Beutler Wilhelm, his siblings Ray, Dennis, Louis, and Gene, and his grandson Aiden Wilhelm. He is survived by his wife Eloise, his sister Carol Martin (Lynn), his children Denise (Derek) Hines , Ken (Shaun) Wilhelm, Nathan (Katy) Wilhelm, Mike (Heidi) Wilhelm, Carl (Laurie) Wilhelm, Robert (Lindsey) Wilhelm, Christina (Michael) Barton, 20 beloved grandchildren and a granddaughter-in-law.
In lieu of donations or flowers, we ask that you spend time with your family (perhaps read a book to a child as Laurn loved to do) or help someone in need of help to honor his legacy as a man who showed his love for his family and Heavenly Father by serving His children.
Friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of life on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at 6:30 pm at the Hunting Creek chapel at 1650 North 400 West, Harrisville, Utah. A private graveside service will be held on Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at the Logan Cemetery.
