Mary Lou Bateman
On Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at 10:30 am, our sweet, peach-eating, chocolate-loving, nice to everyone, and never-swearing mom, ma, grandma, great-grandma, and friend, passed peacefully with family at her side. Though sad to leave her family, mom missed and was eager to be with dad, who passed earlier this year.
Mom was born on October 12, 1941, in Ogden. She attended Ben Lomond High School until her Junior year then transferred and graduated from Ogden High School in 1959. Though we have no evidence, mom claimed she played the drums in high school. At least some of us think mom was trying to trick us into thinking she may have had a “wild side”.
On June 11, 1959, mom married the love of her life, our dad, Alan Henry Bateman. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan temple. While dad worked, mom raised four children: Rick (Kris) Bateman, Clinton; Denise Bateman (deceased); Sherie (Randy) Holst; and Greg “The only begotten” (Teresa) Bateman, Riverdale.
Mom was always involved in her children’s lives. She was a ‘Room Mother’ and in the PTA. She always came to little league games. When we were young, mom took each of us kids to lunch, then to shop for an “Easter Outfit”. There are countless memories of times when mom did something to make us feel important. Rick, the oldest son, sometimes struggled with this and would make comments like, “Why does he get ‘special’ donuts?” A family favorite tradition mom started is a full turkey dinner for breakfast on Thanksgiving. Yum.
When her youngest child started school, mom began working at McKay-Dee Hospital. She became the manager of the snack bar, which eventually became the “Deli”. After many years, mom moved from the Deli to the gift shop. Here, work was secondary to mom’s collecting. Mom started out collecting Beanie Babies. She moved on to WillowTree and finally Lladro figurines. Mom retired shortly after dad.
After living in the same home nearly 60 years, two years ago, mom and dad moved to Riverdale. They loved their new neighbors and making new friends, while remaining close to lifelong friends.
In addition to her four children, mom has nine grandchildren: Amber, Amanda (Mitch), Chad (deceased), Nathan (Petra), Ashley, Alexandra (Ty), David (Kirsten), Christian (Maddy), Carson (Kylie). They also have six Great-Grandchildren: Kamdyn (deceased) Madisyn, Dawson, Stella, Charlotte, Jeremiah, Oliver, and one on the way (June).
Since dad's passing in April 2022, we have had the honor and privilege of assisting mom so she may remain in her home. In this time, we have all learned a different and wonderful side of mom. Her gracious acceptance of assistance, her wise-cracks, and her perseverance were inspiring. She touched our lives in a very positive way, and we are better for our experience with her. We love you mom!
