Reed Hill

November 2, 1936 — June 4, 2024

Reed Glenn Hill Devoted Husband, Father, Grandfather and Friend Reed Glenn Hill, 87, passed away quietly on Tuesday, June 4, 2024. Reed was born November 2, 1936, in Ogden, UT to Glenn Eugene and Lydia May (Lindsay) Hill. His childhood home was on Adam’s Avenue in Ogden. It was a nice home with “stone outside walls.” At the age of 9, his family moved to Uintah Hill following the purchase of 40 acres that included a basement home. While Reed was young, he sometimes would go with his father to help him measure homes for the installation of carpet and linoleum. He became interested in this work and has since passed these original tools and skills down to his sons. As a youth, he loved listening to the radio (The Shadow and Red Skelton). When he was able to save ten cents, he enjoyed going to the Egyptian Theatre to watch sequel westerns such as “The Lone Ranger.” These formative years instilled in him a love for the outdoors, cowboys, and the west. He always had a cow to milk and a horse to feed. His first real paying job was working as a custodian at South Junior High at the age of fifteen. He earned .75 cents an hour which, when saved, enabled him to purchase his first car, a 1937 Chevy Sedan, for $100. Reed loved competing against his brothers in basketball and playing with them on softball teams. During his late teens he played Farm Bureau baseball. He was self-described as a “pretty good player.” He passed his love of baseball onto his sons and coached them through little league. His family spent many evenings at ballparks watching him play fastpitch softball. He turned his love for sports into additional needed income for his growing family by umpiring and refereeing softball, basketball and baseball games. He was a dedicated fan of his children and grandchildren. Reed was always in attendance for games, recitals and activities while spending many hours cheering family members on to victory. He also enjoyed watching his favorite sports teams, the New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants, BYU Cougars and Utah Jazz, on television. Reed was 18 when he met Laree. He said, “She was sexy, beautiful, smart and very talented.” He felt “handsome and happy” when they were together. (The reason he later was known as the “handsome cuss”- because that is how Laree made him feel.) They dated 2 years prior to being sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on March 7, 1957. Reed stated that one of the reasons he fell in love with Laree was that she always put him first… “and she did that until the grandkids came along.” He stated that, “She loved grandchildren in a way that made me proud to be in her life.” At the age of 17, Reed joined the National Guard. Following 3 years of service he transferred to a small postal unit of the Army Reserve. He was eventually promoted to the position of Staff Sergeant. Following 9 years of service he was discharged and able to dedicate full time to his family and postal career. He loved his career and the people he met while delivering mail. He estimated he would walk 11-13 miles a day making deliveries while carrying a 35-pound sack of mail. He eventually received promotions to Supervisor of the Ben Lomond Branch and then to Postmaster of the Roy, UT Branch of the USPS. His successful career enabled him to retire at the age of 55. Reed enjoyed social activities with family and friends. He made regular camping excursions to Island Park (Mack’s Inn) and Yuma, AZ. He enjoyed motorcycle rides, campfires and being together in the outdoors with the people he loved. He also enjoyed playing a round of golf with his sons. Following Reed’s retirement, many wonderful experiences entered his life through service in the LDS Church. His love for people grew through his service as a Ward Bishop and as a Temple Worker. He was also called to serve two LDS Church Missions with Laree. They served a 6-month mission in Salt Lake City escorting visitors to Temple Square in a courtesy van and an 18-month mission to Rochester-Palmyra New York. Through these experiences Reed developed a love for the Prophet Joseph Smith and the early history of the church. Reed is survived by his four children, Kevin (Mary Ann), Karen Green (Korry), Larry (Jolene) and Angie Jones (Todd). He was the proud grandfather of 16 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren. Reed is also survived by his siblings Dee, Loren (Indra), Donna Lander (Ted), Shirley Hutchinson (Bill) and one sister-in-law, Joan (Wayne). He is preceded in death by his wife Laree, siblings Erma Bybee (Lee) and Wayne. Visitation will be available on Sunday, June 9, from 5-7 pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints building located at 2280 N 3600 W Plain City, UT. A viewing will also be available at 9:30 am to 10:30 am Monday, June 10 prior to the funeral services that will begin at 11 am at the church. The family would like to thank the staff of Legacy House and Inspiration Hospice for their conscientious care that softened the blow of our father’s loss. Send condolences to www.gfc-utah.com
