Shirley Pewtress

April 20, 1936 — March 6, 2023

Shirley June Pewtress With heavy hearts we share the passing of our mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great-grandmother, sister and friend. She went peacefully into the arms of her husband, Herbert Don, and loving family and friends that preceded her. Shirley was born on April 20, 1936 in Ogden, Utah, a daughter of Earl Simpson and Juanita Siddoway Heninger. She attended Ogden High School. Shirley meet Don at a high school football game where she tipped over his beloved motorcycle. Don yelled at her and came and picked up the motorcycle and when he left she tipped it over again. From that day they became sweethearts and were married on July 30, 1953 in Ogden, Utah and later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in 1964. Shirley worked at the old Dee Hospital as a nurse. She raised her family and then became a home economist specialist for Utah State University. She loved teaching the young families at HAFB how to be homemakers. One day at a staff meeting she was asked what she needed? She replied a Davis County Fairground, later that week they broke ground. She received the Provost award at Utah State University, and received the best cook of the country from Country Magazine. She loved cooking, music of the masters, painting, master gardener, sewing, crocheting blankets and baby booties which she donated, ceramics, eating ice cream, and making Christmas gifts for her children. She made many blankets, booties, hats. One night dad called her from the tv room telling her come quick you got to see this. On the tv was a young mother in Africa holding her baby with mom's blanket and booties on. Mom and dad always dreamed of a cabin. They built that dream in Lava Mountain, Idaho with a lot of hard work. She was a magnet for animals and they knew she loved them. She had a pet bull moose, chipmunks, flying squirrels, a mountain lion, iguana, hummingbirds, and beavers. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Humanitarian Fund. We would like to thank Brent at Gillies Funeral Chapel, and Fairfield Village staff and Inspiration Hospice for their loving care they showed our mother. Surviving are her five children: Kathy Linford; Debbie Furgeson; Rick (Pamela) Pewtress; Tami (Jim) Ganzer; Troy (Sonya) Pewtress; 15 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and four great great-grandchildren and one sister, Carol (Brent) Thompson.
